Are you happy? That is a rather loaded question and the answer might depend on the time of day it is asked. Happiness is a state of mind and that means we have a lot of control over whether or not we can get happy and stay that way. The focus is always “get through the day” and that can mean different things for different people. However, the quest for being happy can be found through small, simple acts. Try putting these actions into your daily routine to find happiness:
Check In with a Loved One
Thanks for Facebook, it is very easy to know what is going on among your circle of family and friends, but those random posts about what someone is having for lunch might not tell the whole story. It would be nice if you can check in with a loved one each day. Obviously, it doesn’t have to be the same loved one but a quick phone call, text message or even a hand-written letter (remember those?) would not only make them feel happy but also you.
Make a Note of Why You’re Grateful Today
Many people journal as a form of therapy. It can help let go of some issues and process others. You don’t have to journal to be happy but you could write down one thing that you’re grateful each day. Put it on a Post-It note and slap it up in the bathroom or the computer at work. You can surely find one thing that makes you smile each day even if it is the same thing!
Have a Healthy Breakfast
How you start your day will set the tone for that day. Remember the last time you overslept? Wasn’t the rest of the day just rushing to play catch up? You should get into the habit of making yourself a healthy breakfast each morning. Yes, this might mean waking up a bit earlier but those extra 30 minutes of relaxing with a nutritious breakfast can make a world of difference for the rest of your day.
Let Something Go
At this moment in time, how many grudges are you holding onto? Whether it is a coworker, friend or neighbor who has done wrong by you, it might be time to let it go. Holding onto the grudge isn’t helping you one bit. You also don’t need to let the person know you’re forgiving them because they might not change. Let it go in your mind and be done with it. That will make you happy.
Get Some Fresh Air
Humans need sunshine. It provides a boost of Vitamin D. This is why everyone is so cranky in the winter: They aren’t getting outside nearly enough. You owe it to yourself to get some fresh air. That’s true even if it is cold outside. Go out and take in a few deep breaths and smile. Make this part of your new approach to every day.
